Group Assignment #1
Suspense is a feeling of anxiety and uncertainty of the outcome of certain actions. Foreshadowing is to show or indicate beforehand. An example of suspense is "No, she wouldn't remember....She would not think of it! All that was over..." Page 32. Another example is "Queer business when you came to think of it-the whole ting was queer-very queer...." Page 26. Also the last phrase of the nusery rhyme on page 31, "One little indian boy left all alone: He went and hanged himself and then there were none". One other example is on page 36, "Funny the way they all eyed each other-as though they knew....". An example of foreshadowing is "He fancied that he was going to have a good time at Indian Island...." Page7. Another example is "Can't land on Indian Island when there's a southeasterly. Sometimes 'tis cut
off for a week or more" page 27. Another example of foreshadowing is when Anthony Marston was taking a bath and then he was thinking "And after-?". One last example is the nursery rhyme about the ten little Indians.
I chose these examples of suspense because I thought the dots at the end of the sentence is a sign that leaves you wanting to read on in the book and find out what is going to happen. These phrases all ended so suddenly, with out you expecting it which once again makes you want to keep reading. I feel that the nursery rhyme left you with the most suspense because once you finished reading it, you realized how this whole story was coming together. Also that it really related to the guests going to the Indian Island and the title of the story. I chose these examples of foreshadowing because I felt these were all good examples and all of them indicate that something important is going to happen. These are good example because they in a way almost tell you what is going to happen but they end up not telling you. This is why I felt they these were good examples of foreshadowing.
Julia- Good work. And your comment about the examples 'in a way almost tell you what is going to happen but they end up not telling you', is a good statement indicating how this works. You THINK you know what is to come, but then when you least expect it, something else changes. Hope you're enjoying the book. Mrs. M 12-9-11
